Graphic Design as Praxis

Heitman Design is an independent graphic design consultancy with a strong focus on collaboration with the client at the center. Scroll down to read more…

Graphic design is a mode of thinking. The praxis of design is the application of the discipline to solve specific problems with optimal results. Every project requires a unique solution. To get there, careful listening, thoughtful discovery, informed technical expertise, and production know-how come together to realize each client’s individual needs, on time and on budget.

Sustainability is a prerequisite of good design. Efficient use of materials, prioritizing digital media over print when appropriate, specifying recyclable materials and practicing a life-cycle value approach are all essential strategies for minimizing the environmental impact of each project. Do more with less, but make less more.

Tim Heitman | Owner, Heitman Design

Tim Heitman lives his practice and his praxis. A world traveler, he seeks out cultural experiences unique to each place he visits which include regular trips to Venice for the Biennales for Art and Architecture. How do other cultures grapple with graphic design issues, for good or bad? What’s interesting about the various approaches encountered? Tim’s photographic documentation of each journey show up in much of his work, either conceptually or literally as is the case with this website. Years of extensive travel has given Tim a perspective on what makes each culture distinct, and an insight into how culture can be a conduit to our common understanding. He brings this approach to his work as well. Read an example of how travel impacts Tim’s thinking here.

A committed life-long learner, Tim stays abreast of new trends in graphic design, new software, as well as advanced methods and technologies. An avid reader and researcher, with a natural curiosity for just about everything, he’s very proud never to have heard anyone say, “Here, let me google that for you.”
